What to do if you own a recalled product
If a product you own appears below, take these steps. A recall usually entitles you to a free repair, replacement or refund.
- 1
Stop using the product
Stop using the product straight away. If it is electrical, switch it off and unplug it; for an urgent fire or shock risk, turn it off at the mains.
- 2
Find the official notice
Open the official OPSS or manufacturer recall notice (linked from this page) for the exact product.
- 3
Check your model or batch number
Match the model, batch or serial number on the product rating plate to the affected numbers listed in the notice — recalls usually cover specific batches, not every unit.
- 4
Follow the listed remedy
Follow the remedy in the notice — usually a free repair, replacement or refund. Keep the product until the remedy is complete in case you need it to claim.
- 5
Report an unsafe product
If your product is unsafe but not yet listed, report it to OPSS or Trading Standards via gov.uk so others are protected.

Frequently asked questions
- What should I do if I own a recalled product?
- Stop using it immediately and unplug it if it is electrical. Find the official OPSS or manufacturer notice (linked from this page), check whether your exact model, batch or serial number is affected, and follow the listed remedy — usually a free repair, replacement or refund. Do not throw the product away until you have followed the notice, as you may need it to claim. If it is an urgent fire or shock hazard, switch it off at the mains.
- How do I check if my product has been recalled in the UK?
- Search the brand, product name or hazard in the checker on this page — it covers all 200 current OPSS non-food notices (2025-04-15 to 2026-06-25). You can also search the official gov.uk "Product safety alerts, reports and recalls" finder. Match the model number on your product's rating plate to the one in the notice, because recalls usually affect specific batches rather than every unit of a model.
- What is the difference between a product recall, a report and an alert?
- A "product recall" asks consumers to return, dispose of or get a repair for a specific dangerous product. A "product safety report" records an unsafe product that has been removed from sale (often a marketplace listing) so buyers are warned. A "product safety alert" is OPSS warning the public about a wider safety risk. All three are published by OPSS on gov.uk under the Open Government Licence.
- Who issues product recalls in the UK?
- The Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS), part of the Department for Business and Trade, is the UK national regulator for product safety. It publishes recalls, reports and alerts for non-food consumer goods such as electricals, toys, cosmetics, machinery and childcare articles. Food and drink recalls are handled separately by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
- Am I entitled to a refund for a recalled product?
- It depends on the remedy the manufacturer offers in the recall notice — common outcomes are a free repair, a free replacement, or a refund. Follow the contact instructions in the official notice. Separately, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a product that is not safe is not of satisfactory quality, so you may also have a claim against the retailer you bought it from.
- Which product categories are recalled most often?
- In this dataset (2025-04-15 to 2026-06-25), the most-recalled category is Electrical appliances and equipment with 44 notices, followed by Toys (42) and Machinery (20). Electrical goods, toys and childcare items dominate UK product-safety notices because of fire, electric-shock, choking and chemical hazards. Source: OPSS, gov.uk.
