10 Tips for Writing Product Listings That Actually Sell
Most product listings fail buyers before a seller even knows they visited. These ten techniques convert browsers into buyers.
Why Most Listings Fail
A buyer lands on your product page with genuine purchase intent. They spend eight seconds looking at the listing. They leave. This is not inevitable β it is a failure of the listing, not the product or the buyer. Here is how to fix it.
1. Lead With Your Best Photo
The first photo is your listing's most important element. It needs to show the product clearly, in good light, against a clean background. No filters, no text overlays, no props that distract from the product. Buyers need to see exactly what they are buying. Everything else on the page competes for attention with your first photo β give it no reason to lose.
2. Include 4β6 Photos From Different Angles
A buyer who cannot see all sides of a product has unresolved uncertainty. Unresolved uncertainty becomes a reason not to buy. Show the front, back, side, close-up of any detail that matters (stitching, materials, connectors), and the product in use if relevant. On GeraMarket, listings with 5+ photos consistently convert at significantly higher rates than those with 1β2.
3. Write a Title That Matches What People Search For
Your title is search index text. Include: product type, key attribute (colour, size, material), and brand if relevant. "Handmade leather wallet, brown, full grain, bifold" is better than "Premium wallet for gentlemen." The first is what buyers type; the second is what sellers think buyers want to hear.
4. Answer the Three Questions in Your Description
Every buyer has three questions: What exactly is this? Is it right for my specific need? Will it actually arrive and work? Your description should answer all three. What is the product made of? What dimensions does it have? What is and is not included? What are the use cases? What condition is it in (for second-hand items)?
5. Be Specific About Dimensions and Weight
Vague descriptions create returns. A buyer who purchases a "large bag" and receives something smaller than expected is an unhappy customer and a 1-star review. Give measurements in the units your buyers use. Include weight if shipping cost is a factor for buyers.
6. Include All Variants in the Listing
If your product comes in multiple colours, sizes, or configurations β list them all under one listing with variants, rather than creating separate listings. Consolidated listings rank better in search and give buyers a single destination to compare options. Fragmenting into multiple listings dilutes your reviews across products.
7. Set Competitive Pricing (and Show Your Math)
Check three comparable products before setting your price. Price too high relative to the market and you will be filtered out; price too low and buyers question quality. If you are pricing higher for a good reason (handmade, premium materials, faster shipping) β say so explicitly in your description. Buyers will pay more if they understand why.
8. Set Accurate Shipping Timelines
Shipping timelines you can meet are always better than optimistic ones you cannot. A buyer who receives a package two days late is more disappointed than a buyer who expected that timeline and received it on time. Under-promise and over-deliver β or simply be accurate.
9. Respond to Questions Within 24 Hours
A buyer who sends a question and receives no answer buys from a different seller. A buyer who receives a prompt, helpful answer is significantly more likely to convert. GeraMarket shows your average response time on your seller profile β it is visible to every potential buyer before they decide whether to ask anything.
10. Invite Reviews Without Incentivising Them
After delivery confirmation, send buyers a brief follow-up message thanking them and inviting honest feedback. Do not offer discounts for reviews β this is against platform policy and trains buyers to expect incentives. Genuine requests for honest feedback consistently outperform prompted-incentive requests for biased ones.
