What to do if your vehicle is recalled

If your vehicle appears below, take these steps. A safety recall repair is required by law to be free of charge.

  1. 1

    Check your VIN at NHTSA

Enter your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see every open, unrepaired safety recall for your exact vehicle.

  2. 2

    Note the campaign number

Write down the NHTSA campaign number for each recall affecting your vehicle — the dealer uses it to identify the correct free repair.

  3. 3

    Book the free recall repair

Contact a franchised dealer for your vehicle's brand and book the recall remedy. Safety recall repairs are required by law to be free of charge.

  4. 4

    Follow any interim safety guidance

If the notice gives interim advice for an urgent fire, crash or steering risk (for example, park outside until repaired), follow it until the fix is complete.

  5. 5

    Keep proof of the repair

Keep the dealer paperwork confirming the recall was completed. It is useful for resale and confirms the open recall is now closed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my car has been recalled in the US?
Search your make, model or model year in the checker on this page — it covers all 120 recent NHTSA recall campaigns (2026-03-24 to 2026-06-24). For a definitive, VIN-specific answer, enter your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number at nhtsa.gov/recalls: NHTSA shows every open (unrepaired) recall for that exact vehicle. Recalls cover specific production ranges, so the VIN check is the only way to be certain.
What should I do if my vehicle is recalled?
Contact any franchised dealer for your vehicle's brand and book the free recall repair — safety recall remedies are legally required to be free of charge. Mention the NHTSA campaign number from the notice. If the defect is an urgent fire, crash or steering risk, follow any interim guidance in the notice (for example, park outside and away from structures) until the repair is done.
Does a recall repair cost anything?
No. Under US law, the manufacturer must remedy a safety recall free of charge — by repair, replacement, or in limited cases a refund. This applies regardless of the vehicle's age for recalls issued within the relevant period. You should never be charged for a safety recall fix performed at an authorised dealer.
Who issues vehicle recalls in the US?
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the Department of Transportation, oversees motor-vehicle safety recalls. Recalls are announced either by the manufacturer or ordered by NHTSA, and published at nhtsa.gov/recalls as public-domain U.S. Government work. Consumer products (toys, electronics) are handled separately by the CPSC.
Which makes have the most recalls in this dataset?
In this NHTSA dataset (2026-03-24 to 2026-06-24), FORD has the most recall campaigns (27), followed by HONDA (16) and JEEP (16). Recall counts reflect the campaigns sampled in this period, not overall vehicle safety — a recall means a defect was found and is being fixed. Source: NHTSA, nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What is the difference between a NHTSA vehicle recall and a CPSC product recall?
They are separate systems. NHTSA handles motor vehicles, tyres and motor-vehicle equipment (this page). The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) handles consumer products such as toys, electronics and furniture, published separately by GeraMarket at /us-product-recalls. Food and drugs are handled by the FDA.
